No, this post isn’t about the Compass Rose, it’s about a faculty meeting I had yesterday where the compass points were used to help us understand teamwork.
First we were asked to figure out where we were on the compass points. They were as follows:
North-Act, Plunge In and Try Things
South – Need to know that others are okay before acting, concern for feelings of others and be sure all voices are heard.
East- Speculate, Look at the big picture and discuss the possibilities
West – Need to know the details before acting, pay attention to details, know the who, what, when, where and why.
If you know me, then you know I am a classic South. I need to know that before I do anything that those around me or involved in the situation are okay. I put everyone’s feelings before mine. My group (yes there were at least 6 other teachers in this group too) agreed that we are compassionate, we are open minded, we are good listeners and we are empathetic. We do not like confrontations, we take things personally and will stress out and get anxious. We need time to process situations and we need to not be rushed to a decision.
This was the most informative faculty meeting that I’ve been to in a long time. It was nice to know I’m not the only one in this building who feels the way I do.
